7 Signs You Are in Need of a New Roof

7 Signs You Need a New Roof

Did you know that you need to replace your roof about every 20 years? Of course, this depends on the kind of roof you have and the wear-and-tear that your roof undergoes.

If you’re noticing anything weird or off about your roof, you could have a new roof on the horizon.

To learn about the top seven signs that you need a new roof, keep reading. Even if your roof doesn’t currently have these issues, you should know what signs to watch out for.

1. You Find Stains on Your Ceiling

If you find stains or water coming from your ceiling, you might need to look into getting a new roof. We put this one first on the list because it is one of the most common problems and one of the most detrimental problems.

A leak can grow into a bigger problem extremely fast. If you ignore even a small leak, you’re probably going to find yourself with a more expensive problem later.

We also ask our customers to look for mold and structural damage. Both of these can be signs of water damage as well. You might find your ceiling caving in or little bubbles in your ceiling.

To be safe, you should get a roof inspection if you suspect any kind of change in your ceiling. Plus, you should be getting regular maintenance done on your roof if you’re looking to keep your current roof for as long as possible.

Don’t ignore these signs or you could end up with a flooded and/or mold-infested house.

2. Your Current Roof Is 25 Years Old

If your roof hits 25 years, it’s definitely time to get a replacement.

Unless you have a special kind of material on your roof, your roof isn’t likely to make it past 25 years. This is especially if you haven’t had any roof maintenance done. If you have regular roof maintenance, you can improve the lifespan of your roof and prevent spending the money to replace your roof.

However, if you do end up replacing your roof, you might want to consider a stronger roof material that will last longer. If you aren’t planning on staying in your current home for a long period of time, you may not be concerned about your roof’s lifespan, so this may not be of concern.

3. Your Current Roof Is Missing Shingles

If you don’t know, shingles are the overlapping pieces that are located on your roof. If you’re missing any of these, you need to get your roof repaired. Even one missing shingle can make a difference.

Shingles can go missing for several different reasons. The main reason for missing shingles is a storm. High winds and water pressure can knock shingles off of a roof relatively easily.

In fact, many people check the shingles on their roofs after bad storms. If you see any missing, you should call a repair service as soon as possible.

If more and more damage occurs, you could end up with a more beat-up roof or even a flooded house.

4. Your Current Roof Has Cracked, Faded, or Curling Shingles

Damage to your shingles is almost just as bad as missing shingles. If your shingles are cracked, faded, or curling, they aren’t doing their job. They might as well not be there.

Cracked, faded, and curling shingles are also signs of an aging roof. This can tell you that it’s time to get your roof replaced simply because of its age.

Your shingles are becoming cracked, faded, and curled because the asphalt that they’re made of is breaking down over time. This happens naturally and is something that needs to be fixed quickly.

If they’re left in this condition, you could be compromising your entire roof and the integrity of your home.

Keep in mind that roof repairs will actually be more expensive if you don’t catch the damage sooner. By calling a roof repair team now, you’re saving yourself money later. They can address damage before it completely claims your home.

5. You Find Granules in the Gutters

Granules are small pieces of the shingles on a roof. These are the tiny components that make up the shingles.

As they break and shave off of your shingles, the granules typically collect in your gutters as they roll down the roof.

If this happens, your roof is literally falling apart. The material is coming off of your shingles and exposing them. Over time, this will render your shingles (and – in turn – your roof) useless.

If you don’t get this looked at by a professional soon, your roof will start leaking. That is if it hasn’t already started leaking.

We suggest that you take a look in your gutters occasionally, especially if you’re unsure of the age of your roof. While we wouldn’t suggest waiting until your roof is flaking into pieces, we do realize that this method of waiting may be easier for some homeowners.

Plus, it’s great physical evidence that your roof is at the end of its rope. Since some roofs can actually go past their predicted lifespans, a physical sign of roof aging can be more convincing to some homeowners.

Homeowners are more likely to fork over money for a roof that they know is aging than a roof that is supposedly at the end of its lifespan.

6. Your Current Roof Isn’t Level

If you have a leak or another kind of moisture problem, the boards under your roof can become warped. This causes the wood to become discolored and wavy.

Close up, these wet spots look like soft spaces on top of the roof. It’s almost as if you could lightly press the spot and completely cave the roof in.

If you can see these spots from far away, you need to get the issue fixed as soon as possible. You shouldn’t be able to see the water spots from your front yard.

To identify these from a long distance, you should look for raised or depressed spots in your roof. These spots are as result of the wavy boards under the roof. If large sections of your roof are raised or depressed in this way, you should call a roof repair company now.

If you leave this kind of damage, you have two issues blooming. The first problem that you have is the potential leaking, and the second problem that you have is the damage that that water leaking is causing to your roof and your house.

Plus, the longer you leave a damaged roof, the easier that more damage can happen to it. If it rains some more, you may end up with a roof in your attic.

7. Your Current Roof Is an Eyesore

Some people end up simply hating their roof. There may not be anything functionally wrong with it.

While it may not be the best reason to replace your roof, it’s definitely a legitimate reason to do so. Even if there’s no issue with your current roof, you have the right and freedom to replace your roof with whatever style, color, and material you want to.

We suggest researching roofs that you like on places like Pinterest and Instagram. Depending on when your current roof was installed, you probably have a lot more options than the previous owners had when choosing the current roof.

Whether you’re looking for.a modern look or a classic one, there’s a roof to suit your fancy. Be sure to compile a few of your favorites to bring to your chosen roof builder. They can help you find the right style, orientation, color, and material for your home.

Plus, they can help you consider some revolutionary designs that you might not have even found online.

If you’re worried about the money, you should still talk with a skilled team of roof-building professionals. You may actually be able to afford more than you think.

Since you wouldn’t be repairing the roof, you wouldn’t have to worry about standard repair costs. For example, a roof with a water leak would involve replacing the roof and repairing the water damage.
